DML Morning Briefing: Aug 29
Today is August 29 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. 1-Sarah Palin’s lawsuit against NY Times can go to trial: judge
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s defamation lawsuit against The New York Times will go to a trial, according to a federal judge’s ruling Friday.
There was “sufficient evidence to allow a rational finder of fact to find actual malice by clear and convincing evidence,” Judge Jed S. Rakoff of Federal District Court in Manhattan determined.
The judge set a trial date for Feb. 1. The former GOP vice-presidential candidate sued the Times for libel after a June 2017 editorial about the shooting of GOP U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise and others mentioned a map put out years earlier by SarahPAC that had crosshairs over different Democratic congressional districts. While the map had been used in reference to ObamaCare, the editorial connected it to Jared Loughner’s 2011 shooting of then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., whose district was among those identified in the map.
DML: This is a victory for conservatives! Maybe the media will think twice before printing / publishing / airing their BS.
2-Chadwick Boseman dies of cancer
Best known for his role in film Black Panther, actor Chadwick Boseman died Friday.
Boseman was privately undergoing “countless surgeries and chemotherapy” to battle colon cancer, his family said in a statement announcing his death at age 43 on Friday. He’d been diagnosed at stage 3 in 2016 but never spoke publicly about it.
3-Rioter attacks cop with lid cover
A video posted to social media on Thursday shows a Black Lives Matter rioter throwing a trash can lid at a police officer’s head, knocking him to the ground.
A Minneapolis police officer was struck in the head with a trashcan lid and knocked to the ground on Wednesday night during instances of “confusion, unrest, looting and damage downtown,” according to a report by Fox 9.
Watch the video
DML: Here is the equally troubling part of the story, which is the “protester” who tossed the lid will likely be arrested and then released without bail.
4-Chelsea Clinton rags on so-called white privilege
Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton said she was teaching her children to “erode” their “white privilege” over time during a national Women for Biden organizing call with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) Thursday evening.
Clinton said, “You know, 40% of Americans with disabilities report that they have real challenges voting in person. And so in states where there haven’t been, kind of, no-excuse absentee voting or where there hasn’t been the introduction of early voting yet, you know, it still isn’t, kind of, easy, fair or equal for many Americans to vote.”
She continued, “And I think it’s really important that my children understand that. And I think it’s particularly important that they understand that as white children of privilege because I want them to erode that privilege throughout their lives to ensure more people are enfranchised and that equality isn’t just an ideal.”
Here is the video
DML: The good news is she’s the only child of Bill and Hillary.
